Lunges - Time to tone those legs!

The lunge exercise is one of the best exercises that you can do for your thighs and glutes. It’s a great exercise that can be performed anywhere. The lunge can be a difficult exercise to master. However if you get the technique right, it’s an effective exercise that can be performed with or without exercise equipment. Lunges target multiple muscle groups at once, that is, it is a compound exercise. Also, being a functional exercise, a lunge improves your everyday activities in many ways.

Benefits of lunges:
  • Lunges improve whole-body control.
  • Lunges strengthen your buttocks and legs. Strengthening these large muscle groups can speed up your metabolism, which is beneficial if you're trying to lose weight.
  • Lunges can improve your core strength. When doing lunges, you must engage your core muscles, including your back and abdominals, to keep your body upright and balanced as you move your hips up and down.

How to perform a basic lunge correctly?
  1. Stand with your feet together, keep your head up and your shoulders back, place your hands on your hips and as you are facing forward choose a place to keep your eyes focused on as your perform the exercise.
  2. Take a big lunge forward with your first leg and your forward leg should be bent at about a 90 degree angle.
  3. Your thigh should be parallel with the ground and your back knee should be nearly touching the ground, your back leg should also be bent at a 90 degree angle.
  4. Keep your body as controlled and still as possible.
  5. Use your front leg to push yourself back up, push off with your front heel until you’re standing straight up with your feet together.
  6. Repeat with your other leg.

To make it more of a strength move, try lunges with bicep curls and shoulder press!

  1. Get focused and stand up tall with a pair of dumbbells at your side. Keep your core tight and your upper body should be upright for the duration of this entire complex movement.
  2. Lunge forward as usual putting your heel down first and making sure your upper body is in the center of gravity.
  3. Perform a biceps curl when your body is completely stable at the bottom of the lunge.
  4. After you perform your curl keep the dumbbells at shoulder level in a high-hang position.
  5. Lunge back up to a balance and perform a shoulder press.
  6. Try to keep your balance and let the weights come all the way down to your sides at the original position and repeat.

Dynamic Warm-up Exercises

Warm-up activities should be an essential part of any exercise program. The purpose of warming up is to prepare the body for the conditioning or stimulus of the exercise session by increasing blood flow to the heart and to the exercising muscles, which serves to warm up and loosen up muscles.

A dynamic warm-up uses stretches that are "dynamic," meaning you are moving as you stretch. Dynamic stretching is ideal as the core of a warm-up routine for several reasons:
  • It activates muscles you will use during your workout.
  • Dynamic stretching improves range of motion.
  • Dynamic stretches improve body awareness.
  • Warming up in motion enhances muscular performance and power.

Below are 3 exercises which you use in your warm-up routine:
  • High Kicks
  1. If starting with your right leg, extend your left arm straight out.
  2. Kick your leg up while keeping your leg and hand straight so that your toes hit your palm.
  3. Try to progressively kick higher, but complete this exercise while staying under control.
  • Jump Squats
  1. Stand up with your feet about shoulder width apart while holding your hands behind your head, or on your hips.
  2. Squat down until the hips are about parallel with the ground.
  3. Forcibly jump off the ground.
  4. Land softly and repeat the jump.
  • Standing Lunges with Dumbbells
  1. Stand with your torso upright holding two dumbbells in your hands by your sides. This will be your starting position.
  2. Step forward with your right leg around 2 feet or so from the foot being left stationary behind and lower your upper body down, while keeping the torso upright and maintaining balance.
  3. Inhale as you go down. Note: As in the other exercises, do not allow your knee to go forward beyond your toes as you come down, as this will put undue stress on the knee joint. Make sure that you keep your front shin perpendicular to the ground.
  4. Using mainly the heel of your foot, push up and go back to the starting position as you exhale.
  5. Repeat the movement with the left leg.

Go for Compound Exercises Instead!

A compound exercise is one which targets all major muscle groups at once. That is, it is more effective than any isolation exercise which targets only one muscle group at once. Performing compound exercises is a style of strength training which builds up muscle mass quickly, dramatically improves overall fitness while strengthening the body as a whole. Compound exercises give a boost to your power and endurance. The best part is that you see results quicker with compound moves than with any other exercise moves!

I’m bringing to you 3 highly effective yet simple compound exercises and instructions on how to perform the basic form of the exercises correctly to avoid injury and get the most out of your workout routine.
  1. Squats
  2. Deadlifts
  3. Bench press

SQUATS
  1. Stand with feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart, hips stacked over knees and knees over ankles.
  2. Roll the shoulders back and down away from the ears. Note: Allowing the back to round cause unnecessary stress on the lower back. It's important to maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement.
  3. Extend arms out straight so they are parallel with the ground, palms facing down.
  4. Initiate the movement by inhaling and unlocking the hips, slightly bringing them back. Keep sending hips backward as the knees begin to bend.
  5. The best squats are the deepest ones your mobility allows. Optimal squat depth would be your hips sinking below the knees.
  6.  Engage core and, with bodyweight in the heels, explode back up to standing, driving through heels.

DEADLIFTS
  1. Stand with the bar above the center of your feet – your stance should be a bit more narrow than shoulder-width to give your arms room.
  2. Grab the bar overhand so your arms are vertical to the floor.
  3. Bend through your knees until your shins hit the bar which must remain above the middle of your feet. Shoulder-blades directly over the bar.
  4.  Lift your chest but don’t squeeze your shoulder-blades like on Squats. Just put your shoulders back & down, head in line with rest of your spine.
  5.  Pull - keep the bar close to your body, roll it over your knees and thighs until your hips and knees are locked. Do not lean back at the top.

BENCH PRESS
  1. Lie on your back on a bench.
  2. Lift a barbell off the rack or start with dumbbells at your shoulders.
  3. Press weights up until your arms are fully extended.
  4. Lower them to your chest and repeat the exercise.

Hit the Gym, Gentlemen, with HyperGH 14x

Quick question for you. What's the leading cause of death for American men? According to the Center for Disease Control, it's heart disease, which in 2006, accounted for just over a quarter of all deaths among men in the United States. That might have been a few years ago, but further stats suggest that risk of heart disease hasn't faded much since then. You know those risks right? Obesity, smoking and stress, among others.

And, of course, lack of exercise. Suffice to say, it's important for men of all ages to exercise. Any thing's good, really, so long as we get at least 30 minutes per session, and preferably five or six times a week. Of course, most men are more into the free weights routine than aerobics, and there's nothing wrong with that. So long as you're getting some cardio in there, somewhere, men can get most of their exercise needs met with good old resistance training.

In this article we'll discuss three of the core resistance exercises that are most beneficial to men, for health, longevity and less chance the grim reaper will come before you've achieved what you want in this life. We'll also review that men should indeed supplement for the gym with age. What supplement works best? Hint: it ain't steroids. Try HyperGH 14x. We'll get to that.

Work Those Core Muscles

Biceps are sexy, and girls may like big arms, but for health and the most benefits of weight training, your core comes first. Your core is your torso, meaning from below your neck to your upper legs. Save the arms for another day. No core, no gains. Very simple.

Core muscles give balance to the body. Done correctly, exercises that work your core not only provide an amazing stress release, they thicken your bones, develop physical strength and promote good balance, which in a man's later years, may reduce the chances he'll fall. Considering that unintentional injuries are the third leading cause of death among men in the United States, core exercises should be the starting point of any resistance training exercise regimen. Do these exercises, and you're well on your way.

Deadlifts

Arguably the single most beneficial exercise you can do, deadlifts have the distinction of working every major body part. If you do one exercise all week, do deadlifts. Having said this, it's very important to do deadlifts with good form. This is a strenuous exercise that, if you do it wrong, can really mess up your spine. Don't arch your back with deadlifts – position your back inwards, and your posterior out.

To do a deadlift, place your palms on the bar, one hand with an over hand grip, the other under-handed. Your feet should be straight, roughly shoulder-width or slightly wider apart. Push down hard with your legs as you lift up the bar. Back in, butt out, slowly lift, then place back down. That's one.

Squats

Another great full body exercise, squats thicken the spine and work those core muscles that develop physical strength and balance. In the pecking order of most beneficial exercises, it's number two. The caveat with squats is that, when done with the traditional method of a bar placed on the shoulders, you're putting weight on your spine. That's not always good, so form matters.

We'll get to alternative squat exercises in a moment. But for guys who practice good form, and don't push stupidly heavy weights, squats are excellent. If you're one of these guys, place the bar behind your neck, resting on your shoulders. As with dead lifts, position your back in and your posterior outwards to alleviate pressure on your spine. Slowly lower your body, until your knees are at a 90 degree angle. Then push hard with your knees as you go back up. Squats are an excellent exercise, but the key here is not to strain the spine. As an alternative, consider similar squat motion movements with a set of dumb bells. Or try sumo squats.

Bench Press

All right gentlemen, you're at the pinnacle of resistance training. Tell a guy you work out and he's likely to ask you a simple question, "How much can you bench?" In his day, Arnold Schwarzenegger could bench close to 400 pounds, which is crazy by any standards. As of 2011, the current record for an assisted bench press is over 1000 pounds. Ouch.

To do the bench press, lay flat on your back, with your feet on the floor. Place your hands just outside shoulder-width apart. Lift the bar off the frame, and slowly lower the weight to just above your belly button. Don't bounce it off your stomach. Push hard, and raise it back to the starting position. With bench press, remember to use a spotter for heavier weights. Stay the course with bench. Do it often, for upper body strength and a great set of pecs.

Supplement with HyperGH 14x

Some guys do the steroids gig, and there's no question that those needles will have your biceps bulging bigger than a king-sized set of watermelons. But steroids will also leave you with acne, shrunken testicles, risk of permanent impotence, stroke and heart attack, 'roid rage. This could go on for a while. And though steroids are more of a younger man's game, it's not uncommon for senior men to supplement with synthetic Human Growth Hormone (HGH) which, when you consider the costs and risks involved, aren't much of a better option. But growth hormone has a measurable influence on muscle growth, and exercise can stimulate exercise-induced growth hormone response, or EIGR, for less fat, more muscle tone and better results from similar efforts in the weight room.

And this means? Use a natural growth hormone supplement, like HyperGH 14x, which stimulates natural, as opposed to synthetic growth hormone, from your own body, for muscles, anti-aging benefits, and ultimately, health and happiness. Click HERE to get yours!

Mountain Climber Exercise – A full body exercise in one move

Mountain climber is one of the plyometric exercises which strengthen multiple muscle groups in addition to the cardiovascular system. It is an advanced, high intensity exercise that will get your heart rate up and add intensity to your workouts. This move will also build leg endurance and help you work on agility as well, making it a great overall exercise. It challenges your balance, agility, proprioception and coordination. It benefits muscular and cardiovascular fitness by increasing strength, flexibility and blood circulation. What more do you want from a single exercise move?

During mountain climbers, your muscles are hard at work balancing, controlling and moving your body. Numerous muscles stabilize the upper arm bone into the joint, but the largest shoulder muscle at work is the deltoid. Your triceps keep your arms straight. Your abdominals along with your back muscles control your hips and sustain your core. The quadriceps of your back leg fully engages to keep your leg erect. The hip flexors fire up to draw your knee in toward your chest and your butt muscles contract to extend the hip. Traditional mountain climbers focus on your hip flexors and your rectus abdominis, one of your abdominals also known as the six-pack muscles. In other words, you are getting a full-body workout.

How to perform a mountain climber correctly?
  1. Begin in a push-up position on the hands and toes.
  2. Bring the right knee in towards the chest, resting the foot on the floor.
  3. Jump up and switch feet in the air, bringing the left foot in and the right foot back.
  4. Continue alternating the feet as fast as you safely can for 30-60 seconds.
Add this move at the end of your regular cardio workout for an added boost, or do it a few times during your workout whenever you want to add intensity or mix things up.

A few things to keep in mind:
  • The mountain climber is a great dynamic core stability exercise but you need to first be able to master the static push-up hold or plank position before you try it.
  • It’s absolutely critical to keep your arms straight with your hands directly underneath your shoulders while also maintaining a straight-body position from head to toe.
  • A good mountain climber has your moving at your hips, not your lower back.
  • If mountain climbers bother your back then you need to slow down the movement and work on your hip mobility and core stability.
  • It also might help to not let your foot touch the floor as you bring each knee in towards your chest. This makes it more like a running push-up than a mountain climber.
